Toe ek die Suide van die Stille Oseaan Eilande besoek het, het ek ‘n notaboek saamgeneem.
Ek het drie weke se verlof tussen projekte in Japan gehad en het toe ‘n boot geleen en na Kiniwata geseil. Die notaboek was veronderstel om my te help om ‘n junior graadse Maugham of Michener te word. Maar met my terugkeer, was die enigste sin wat my belangstelling geprikkel het, die een wat gestel het, “Johnny Lingo het agt koeie aan Sarita se pa gegee.”

When I visited the South Pacific Islands, I took a note book along.
I had a three week leave between assignments in Japan, so I borrowed a boat and sailed to Kiniwata. The notebook was supposed to help me become a junior grade Maugham or Michener. But when I got back, among all my notes, the only sentence that still interested me was the one that said, “Johnny Lingo gave eight cows to Sarita’s father.”

Ek en Mandy is op 5 Junie 1976 getroud.
Dit was gedurende die oorlog in Rhodesië, en ek was vir die eerste ses maande van ons huwelik in die weermag (diensplig) vir ses weke op ‘n slag met tien dae tussen in af. Dit was nie ‘n goeie begin nie, maar ons was verlief en het dit hanteer. Daarna is ons vir twee jaar Bybelskool toe – of eerder, ek is Bybelskool toe terwyl Mandy gewerk het. Ek sal haar ewig dankbaar wees vir haar opoffering. Hierna het ons vir 18 maande na ons moedergemeente teruggekeer voordat ons beroep is om ons eie gemeente in Fort Victoria te behartig. Teen daardie tyd was ons maar vier jaar getroud. Ons was jonk en groen. Hierdie sou ons oefenterrein in kwessies van die regte lewe wees.

My Testimony
Mandy and I were married on the 5th of June 1976.
It was during the time of the war in Rhodesia, and for the first six months of our marriage, I was in the army (compulsory call up) for six weeks at a time, with ten days’ break in between. Not a great start, but we were in love, and we managed. Then we left for two years’ training in Bible College – rather, I trained while she worked. I will forever be grateful to her for her sacrifice. After this we returned for 18 months to our mother church before we were given a post to take over an assembly of our own in Fort Victoria. By this time, we had only been married for about four years. We were young and green. This was to be our training ground in real life issues.

Maar as die fondasie op nederigheid en ‘n diensbare hart gebou is, sal die beproewinge paartjies na ‘n pragtige diepte van liefde bring wat onvergelykbaar is.
HOLY SPIRIT - ENHANCED LOVE IN A MARRIAGE
It is when one goes through severe difficulties that one’s marriage relationship is tested. It either falls apart or grows closer together. If the foundation of the marriage is selfishness and pride, then it will fall apart. But, if the foundation is based upon humility and a servant heart, then difficulties just draw couples to a beautiful depth of love which is unmatched and beyond human capabilities.
